Learning is not the product of teaching. Learning is the product of the activity of learners. -John Holt

What is Active Learning?

Any type of learning that allows students to actively participate in their own learning process.

Why Active Learning?

  • Increases engagement

  • Increases enjoyment

  • Improves academic scores

  • Develops collaborative skills

  • Increases retention

  • Deeper level of understanding

  • Improves critical thinking

Bloom's Taxonomy

A model used to classify educational learning objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. As the pyramid continues upwards, the categories become more interactive. Active learning is built on this model: the higher level within the Bloom's taxonomy pyramid, the more that active learning is occuring.

Active Learning in the Classroom

Active learning is not meant to completely remove lecturing within a classroom, instead, it is meant to replace a portion of solely lecture-focused learning with some active learning. Splitting up lecture time with active learning allows students to practice what they have learned within the lecture portion during the active learning time.

My Research

Although active learning has been widely implemented into in-person classrooms since the 1970's, very few courses have implemented active learning techniques into the online classroom. My research focuses on the implementation of different active learning techniques into the online anatomy classroom.
